What is the origin of particulate matter?

Air pollution can have different origins:

  1. Traffic, such as diesel engine emissions. This includes diesel engines include in (sea) ships and locomotives. Additionally, particulate matter is also generated by friction of brakes, abrasion of rubber tires and the road surface.
  2. Emissions from industry, for example the metal industry. Particulate matter is also released when bulk goods are processed.
  3. Emissions by farms, from straw and dried manure in stables.
  4. Emissions from power stations.
  5. Emissions from homes, for example by a fireplace, a wood stove, an all-burner, the barbecue as well as cigarette smoke.
  6. Natural sources, for example sea salt, or dust from the soil.
